How to Make Your 808s Hit Harder (Without Blowing Up the Mix)

The 808 is the heartbeat of trap. If it doesn't hit, nothing else matters. These tips work with any 808 sample or plugin.

1. Tune it to the key

An 808 out of key with the melody muddies everything. Find your track's root note and tune the 808 so its fundamental matches.

2. Use glides with intent

Slides on the last note of a bar or into the drop add movement. Keep glide time short (around 50-120 ms) so it stays punchy.

3. Saturate for small speakers

Phone speakers can't reproduce 40 Hz. Light saturation adds harmonics so the 808 is still heard on small speakers. Don't overdo it.

4. Keep it mono and give it space

Keep everything below about 120 Hz mono, and don't let the kick and 808 fight: either layer them so they hit together or sidechain the 808 to the kick.

5. Arrangement beats processing

Drop the 808 out for a bar before a section and bring it back on the downbeat. That contrast makes it hit harder than any plugin.
